Amethyst Radiotherapy UK operates two highly specialised Radiosurgery Centres, using the Gamma Knife* platform specially designed to treat previously inoperable brain lesions.
The two UK Centres are at the Queen Square Radiosurgery Centre, co-located in ULCH’s the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosergery; and at the Thornbury Radiosurgery Centre in Sheffield. You can find further information for each Centre by following the links at the bottom of this page.
Gamma Knife is a non-invasive stereotactic radiosurgery platform that involves no scalpel or incision – indeed it is not a knife at all. Instead, Gamma Knife uses up to 201 precisely-focused beams of radiation to control malignant and non-malignant tumours, as well as vascular and functional disorders in the brain, without harming surrounding healthy tissue.
Patients are typically in and out of the hospital in a day, and back to their normal routines soon after treatment. Gamma Knife radiosurgery may be used in place of – or in addition to – traditional surgery or whole brain radiation, depending on a patient’s diagnosis.
